Counselling Process

Your counsellor operates from a framework that believes therapeutic goals can be reached by processing the thoughts, emotions, and values that interact with and influence behaviors and experience. Your counsellor will work to assist you in this process and at times may challenge you to determine if an existing pattern of thinking, feeling, or behaving is beneficial in your life.

As a client you have complete control over your choice of goals and the direction of your counselling experience. Your counsellor is skilled in several different therapeutic techniques which may be used alone or in combination to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours in order to obtain your counselling goals. These include but are not limited to:

  • Narrative Therapy
  • Gestalt Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Family Mediation
  • EMDR
  • Crisis intervention
  • Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy

Your counsellor will inform you about these techniques and their potential to help you reach your goals. It is important to remember that counselling is a personal and introspective journey, as such please discuss with your counsellor what you feel is the best fit for you.

If you feel that a particular approach is not well suited for you, or for whatever reason you are not satisfied, please discuss this with your counsellor and they will be happy to make any necessary changes to help you reach your goals.

Rights and Responsibilities

During your counselling experience, you may become aware of, or experience distress in your life as you process and make changes to the emotions, values, and meanings that are influencing you. You have the right to stop any therapeutic technique or process at any time if you feel uncomfortable, do not wish to continue, or do not feel that it is helping you reach your goals.

Your have the right to discuss any problem or grievance you have with you counsellor. If you are not satisfied with the resolution you have the right to report any grievances to the Ethics Committee of the Canadian Counselling Association.
